SB 288 (Battin)
Gaming.
Southwest
California Legislative Council Position: SUPPORT
Signed by
the Governor
Summary
SB 288 would
restore $20 million to local governments
from the Indian Gaming Special Distribution Fund (SDF).
SB 288 would also require the counties
benefiting from the SDF to submit reports on October 1
of each year to the chairperson of the Joint Legislative
Budget Committee, the chairpersons of the Senate and
Assembly committees on governmental organization, the
Department of Finance, and the California Gambling
Control Commission.
This $20
million appropriation from SB 288 would ensure the local
governments throughout California affected by tribal
government gaming operations can continue to fund vital
local programs.
The SDF is fully funded by the tribal
government gaming revenues and distributes money to
communities throughout California.
Our neighboring tribe, the Pechanga Band of Luiseņo Indians, has already
paid $50 million into the SDF. These funds have
benefited the City of Temecula tremendously over the
past two years: Temecula has received
in excess of $5 million dollars for various projects to
assist in the mitigation of tribal gaming on the south
end of the City.
The following past projects funded
from SDF money include:
- the design/construction of Wolf
Creek Fire Station
- ultimate improvements
(acquisition/design) of the Highway 79
- South/Interstate 15 interchange
- and the ability to hire
several additional law enforcement personnel.
SB 288 would
provide the City of Temecula and the Riverside County a
considerable amount of money to improve public safety
and basic infrastructure projects needed due to the
impacts of Indian gaming in the area.
